Become a Business Broker in a LINK Office

"It is only as we develop others that we permanently succeed."
   (Harvey Firestone, Firestone Tyres)

LINK is always interested in discussing career opportunities with talented, motivated individuals to join our team of busines brokers.  With over 10 years in the business broking market, LINK has earned an unparalleled reputation as a leader in the industry.

Our valued relationships in the community coupled with extensive experience will provide a solid foundation on which new brokers can build their career.

Ideal candidates for business brokers will enjoy helping people achieve their goals, and see opportunity in challenging situations as opposed to obstacles!  LINK's performance based compensation plan removes the ceiling from your earnings potential.  Candidates must demonstrate an ability to support themselves during the start-up phase, generally four to six months.

LINK is selective when choosing business brokers to join its team of professional  brokers, and is seeking full time, committed professionals with entrepreneurial drive, and significant energy.  That's because when you join LINK, you are choosing to team up with the Australasia's Premier Business Broking Firm.  You have made the decision to exponentially increase your efficiency, expertise and most importantly, your earnings.

For the last 10 years, LINK's leadership in the industry has pioneered and set the professional standard by which all other business brokerage firms are measured.  LINK's unparalleled experience and expertise, unmatched resources, and the most highly trained network of Professional Business Brokers have been instrumental in the sale of 100's of businesses in NZ and Australia.

When you become a LINK business broker you will be trained to provide every client with exactly the same level of service and professional resources that a large institutional client receives from their investment banker.  LINK is committed to working diligently with every broker as advocate and mentor, providing each with the proper tools and training needed to successfully compete within the industry, while providing a comprehensive team consultative approach to each and every business transaction, combined with continual ongoing training and support. You'll find yourself in extremely good company as a Professional dealing with other like-minded Professionals.

A LINK business broker is a professional executive, equipped with the knowledge to successfully complete the sale of an existing business, franchise or business opportunity.  As a LINK Business Broker, you will be working on a daily basis with other professionals: business owners, buyers, seasoned entrepreneurs, as well as top executives in accounting firms, legal partnerships, banks and financial institutions, and National and International franchise companies.

You will serve people from all walks of life.  They will come to you for help to buy or sell a business. You will be their negotiator, counsellor, marketer, broker, advisor and teacher.  You will shape many futures.  Your personal integrity will not just be supremely important – it will be paramount.

We have successfully trained people from many different backgrounds, to become top producers and business brokers.  Our success stories include those initially trained as; Accountants, Lawyers, Bankers, former mid-high level management executives.  Almost all have successfully operated their own businesses.  People who feel that they are ready to expand their capabilities with the leader in a dynamic and growing industry feel at home at LINK.

In summary:

  • LINK is positioning itself as the leader and most professional provider of broking services in the mid-to-upper end of the business sales, franchise sales and the M & A marketplace.
  • LINK is committed to increasing the level of technology and resources available to its brokers.
  • LINK is committed to increasing the level of professionalism in all ways, and in the way opportunities are presented to buyers.
  • LINK is also committed to maintaining a unique caring and pleasant working environment where people want to work and where individual efforts are rewarded, as well as the team being rewarded for successes.
  • LINK continually seeks ways and means of increasing its market reach both locally and internationally.
  • LINK will continue to seek and exploit strategies that differentiate it from its competitors.

Almost without exception, the brokers at LINK have all had experience in buying, selling and operating their own businesses before becoming business brokers.  They understand the process of buying and selling and the emotional stress that it can have on both the buyer and seller.  LINK brokers work closely with both parties to make the transition process as smooth and pleasant as possible.

At LINK, we take the time to walk each prospective buyer through the total buying process which includes matching them with a business that fits the profile information that they provide to us.  Our goal is to show a buyer only those listings that fit their interests and talents, as well as their budget.  Sellers can be assured that our goal is to show their business only to those who appear to be financially capable to make them an offer, and where there is a clear fit.  Both parties ultimately win and save time by taking this approach.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a license?

Yes a Real Estate salespersons certificate is required before commencement.  We recommend home-study schools because they are quick and inexpensive, but for those wishing to take a quicker route, contact classes are available.

How long is the training at LINK?

Our mentor period is generally six months, but as with everything – training goes on forever, as we strive to learn and share.

How does the mentor program work?

The new business broker partners with a senior Broker (5 years experience) and shares the work and fees on an agreed split.

Are there any costs?

Yes. Business Broking falls under the umbrella of New Zealand Real Estate, and as such anyone wishing to work as a Business Broker must apply to the Real Estate Agents Authority for a license.  For a license application pack, go to http://www.reaa.govt.nz/ - Licensing, Applying for a License.

There are three classes of license:

  • Agent - this allows the licensee to carry out real estate agency work on his or her own account (whether in a partnership or otherwise).
  • Branch Manager - this allows the licensee to carry out real estate agency work for or on behalf of an agent.
  • Salesperson - this allows the licensee to carry out real estate agency work for or on behalf of an agent.  A salesperson must be supervised by an agent or a branch manager when carrying out any real estate agency work.

How long will it take before I close my first transaction?

How good are you? Generally four to six months.

How much money does the average broker make?

There is no average.  Our top brokers have earned as much as $600,000 in one year.  A few fail, and the rest fall in between at their personal income comfort level.  Most brokers earn more each successive year, as they become more experienced and their network develops.

How is the commission divided?

This will be discussed at an interview with the respective manager.

What are the qualities of a successful business broker?

In probable order of importance they are:
1.  People skills, including communication, empathy and listening abilities.
2.  Ability to work both as a team member and independently to prioritise tasks and clients.
3.  Background and experience.  Only a few of our 150 brokers have had prior business brokerage experience before joining LINK.  Common backgrounds are prior business ownership, professional sales, legal and financial.
